COMMUNITY LEARNING

We are a vital, interactive, student-centered, discipline based program. We are committed to the creative and technical aspects of art making, critical thinking and idea development. We welcome students of all levels of ability and experience. Artists and non-artists can express themselves, learn, grow, experiment and explore in a supportive and academic atmosphere. Take classes for college credit or just for fun!

Beginning and continuing students who do not need to transfer credit can take painting and drawing classes without the prerequisite 2d Design course. Have Camille Rendal or the instructor sign you in!

For our non-credit courses click here: COMMUNITY LEARNING.

Our Mission

In addition to and including the 5 purposes outlined in the College Strategic Plan, the Art Department in particular seeks to:

1) expose students to a wide variety of art making experiences and possibilites.

2) foster creativity and individual growth as an artist in three areas: technical skill, artistic voice and content, understanding of basic artistic principles.

3) bring art making and understanding of creative thinking, problem solving and methodology to students who are both artists and non-artists.

4) understand that in art there are many opposing ideas that are both possible and correct so we seek to embrace the diverse talents and strengths of the students and staff.

5) provide a secure and welcoming environment for both students and staff.

Students

Students range in age from late teens to early eighties and can take classes for credit or not.

The Art Faculty, in conjunction with Student Services, reaches out to work with the abilities of students who have special needs of any kind, in their learning career.  Because the process of creating art is holistic, and art has many ways to express ideas, the student with a unique mode of learning may look forward to finding an inspiring class within the art studio.

STUDENT COMMENTS:

I took Drawing and 2D Design.  I finished up with the Multimedia Technology degree last May.    Everyday as I go about life I have an appreciation for my surroundings - the designs, the colors - and you are the reason that my thinking will never be the same.

I want say that your class had a huge impact on me.  Not only did I learn more than I could have imagined, but your class was one of the first art courses in which I was able to express my creative side. More than anything, I greatly appreciated the fact that you never made me feel bad about my work and that you allowed me to learn through making mistakes.  You encouraged me consistently while maintaning high expectations.

I especially appreciated how good you were to me in 2D class because I was just beginning and at that stage where getting the wrong teacher would have crushed me. You helped give me the courage to keep moving forward in a new a scary place.

Excellent class, great learning experience and very challenging also. One of the best classes I have taken at FRCC.

I learned a tremendous amount in this class. I took the class as requirement that fit my schedule but have been delighted with the class.

The techniques that I have learned in this class will last a lifetime.

This class has been challenging yet very interesting. I have learned a great deal in this class.

We are located on the edge of Longmont, just minutes from Boulder, Colorado. As you enter town on the Diagonal Highway from Boulder, immediately turn right on Hover (the first light) then turn left at the next light (Pike). We are the first 2 lefts at Miller and Pike. Enter door number one located at the far east side of the building and you have found our classrooms.

Diversity

Honoring Diverse Teaching Styles

Diversity is at the heart of education. In our contemporary times, it is widely viewed that students are greatly enhanced through the experience of diversity. For Institutions of Higher Learning this is achieved through living policies that, respect, value and utilize the differences of all people toward achieving the common goal of educational excellence. These differences include race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, geographic background, education, economic background and thinking and communication styles. Nowhere is the concept of diversity in thinking and communication styles so readily embraced as in the study and practice of art. Diversity is in fact the essence of art in its historical development. Differences in thought, and therefore style are highly prized. From Michelangelo's Renaissance period to Warhol's Pop movement and beyond, the change in thought and practice and the representatives of theseaesthetic revolutions define the course of Art's History.
As a united faculty body, we embrace this ideal in the work of our students and their thoughts and learning processes and in our own work, our unique perspectives and our individual teaching styles. We are professionals of vision with a common goal to bestow upon our students a rich body of knowledge. How each of us bestows that knowledge to our students, the methods we use and the logical order we choose is indeed a paradigm of diversity. Working hand in hand with the administration, we can insure diversity of teaching methods, which will enrich and mirror, the ever-growing diversity of American society. We applaud fresh ideas, discussion and suggestions but we reject uniformity in its very principle and embrace the power of diversity.
